Obituary Information
Tim Delaney, 2004 Brockton High School Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee
On March 17, 1948, Tim Delaney lived up to his Irish heritage and was born to Marjorie (Wright) Delaney and the late Joseph Delaney. On December 29, 2004, Tim died after a valiant fight with cancer
Tim was born in Brockton and was a 1966 graduate of Brockton High School. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Bridgewater State College and had retired from the Brockton School Department in June 2004 after thirty-four years as a teacher. Tim began his teaching career at the Paine Elementary School and ended it at the Kennedy Elementary School. During his years as a teacher, he shared his love for mathematics with his students and prided himself on their outstanding test scores on both state and national examinations.
As a life long resident of Brockton, Tim was an avid supporter and coach of youth athletics in the city. He coached the Brockton High School Girls' Volleyball team for five years from 1980-1984. During this period of time, his teams won the State title in 1980 and three Suburban League Championships. Tim was named the Suburban League "Coach of the Year" three times.
When his sons, Kevin, Michael and Mark were old enough to start youth sports, Tim gave up coaching the girls' volleyball team to spend more time coaching his sons. He coached them through soccer; and he assisted in coaching the boys through little league, pony and colt baseball. Tim also coached his sons in CYO Basketball, Hancock Community Schools, and West Junior High School Community School Basketball. As a coach of youth basketball, Tim's teams won a total of ten city championships.
Tim spent a great deal of his after school time in the gym running after school sports programs for the Community Schools Program and the school department's Intramural Program. For 18 summers, Tim worked with youth as an instructor of both basketball and baseball in the city's "Get Ready Program." Many of his young athletes went on to become high school standouts at Brockton High.
Tim was an avid fan of Brockton High School athletics. He attended all home and away games of the football team, and as many as was humanly possible of the basketball (girls and boys) teams. He also followed the baseball teams. As an avid supporter of BHS athletics, Tim was instrumental in the formation of the Save Our Sports program at BHS. He also volunteered to set up the football boosters' food booth prior to the start of all home football games while his son Michael was a member of the football team.
As a result of all of his coaching, volunteering and support of youth athletics in the city, Tim was inducted into the Brockton High School Athletics Hall of Fame in November 2004, a recognition he considered a great honor
Tim also leaves several aunts, cousins, nephews a niece and in-laws
