Doris B. Butler, 86, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004, at Tift Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M., Friday, December 31, 2004, at First Baptist Church, Fitzgerald, Georgia, with Rev. Kelly Brown, Rev. Gerald Thomas and Rev. J.E. Moak officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 to 8:30 Thursday evening.
Mrs. Butler was born December 11, 1918, in Ben Hill County, Georgia, to the late George Franklin and Sarah Garrison Barnes. She was the retired Executive Director of the Housing Authority for the City of Fitzgerald with thirty-four years of service. Mrs. Butler was a member of the First Baptist Church, Fitzgerald and the Rebekah Sunday School Class. She sang for fifty-six years in the Sanctuary Choir, was pianist of the Adult Department of Sunday School for forty years and was a member of the Organ Fund and Music Committees. She was a long-time member of the Board of Directors for the Blue-Gray Memorial Association, a former board member of the local Cancer Society, a member of the Fitzgerald Country Club, the Fitzgerald Elks Lodge # 1036 and served on various committees for the Georgia Housing Association.
Mrs. Butler is survived by her daughter, Latrelle G. Dixon and son-in-law, Dr. Sammie D. Dixon, of Tifton; three grandchildren: Sammie D. Dixon, Jr., Thomasville, GA, Sara Beth Pomeroy, Monticello, FL and Patrick Dixon, Athens, GA; three great-grandchildren: Anna Kate Pomeroy, Isabelle Pomeroy and Corbin Dixon; one sister: Gladys B. Gibbs, Fitzgerald. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Charles Butler.
