Obituary

Amelia “Mickey” Lubansky, 88 passed away at home on January 31.

Born September 30, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she grew up there with her parents Frank and Helen Bienek, brother Frank and sister Delphine. In Mickey’s younger days, she did clerical and secretarial work. She assisted the war effort by working at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach. One of her favorite jobs was conducting time efficiency studies. Around this time, she met Donald Lubansky and they wed in August 1948 in Minneapolis.

Besides living in Minnesota, Mickey and Don also resided in Bremerton, WA and Washington, D.C., where Don’s work as a civil electrical engineer took them.

Mickey and Don moved to Ventura in 1966 with their 3 daughters when he accepted a civil engineering position at Port Hueneme’s Naval Ship Missile Systems Engineering Station. In Ventura, Mickey became an advocate for libraries and acted as library chairman at Elmhurst Elementary School, expanding their collection from a few hundred to almost 4,000 books. Later, she was also library chairman at St. Bonaventure High School. Mickey and Don enjoyed road trips and travel, being on bowling leagues and volunteering for Foodshare and the County Hospital’s Green Door Toy Gift Shop. They were both active at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, with Mickey being a long time member of the Young Ladies Institute (YLI). In more recent years, she became involved with the local Caregivers organization.

For recreation, Mickey enjoyed playing Mexican Train with a group of friends, bunco, and lunch after Sunday Mass with the gals. She was a voracious reader, particularly fond of mysteries, especially Agatha Christie. Mickey never drove after an “incident” with one of Don’s prized vehicles early in their marriage. She walked a lot as a means of transportation, exercise and doing errands.

Mickey had a positive attitude in life and was always quick with a story and a smile. Everyone was welcome in her home for a card game or holiday dinner.

Mickey was preceded in death by her husband Don in December 1996. She is survived by her sister Delphine Schuman (Minneapolis, MN), brother Frank Bienek (Stevens Point, WI), sister-in-law Kathryn Zilka (Minneapolis, MN), daughters Susan Leonard (Dave), Lynn Lubansky, Donna Lee Slattery (Chad), grand-daughters Robyn Neal, Sarah Whorton (Carl) and great-grandchildren Nicole Neal and Ryan and Nora Whorton.

The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Tushla for his exceptional care and compassion to Mickey during her illness.
