Alton----Doris McGrath, 86, of Alton, N.H. passed away on January 26, 2015. Doris was born May 16, 1928 in Schenectady, New York.
Doris moved to New Hampshire in 1940 with her parents, graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester and attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Doris married Francis Joseph “Peter” McGrath in 1950 and together they built a thriving general store in Alton Bay, N.H. and raised 4 children; Kathleen Cowden, Kerry Smith, Kevin and Clifford McGrath.
In 1970, McGrath’s General Store and home burned to the ground. Doris and Peter built and grew 3 grocery stores from that tragedy. They retired at the age of 55 and enjoyed 10 years of travel and recreation. They returned to the grocery store business for several years in their “Golden Years”. Peter succumbed to cancer in 2001 and Doris has joined him after a long illness with Alzheimer’s disease.
Doris was an amazing business woman, loved reading, travel and gardening, was President of Alton’s Garden Club and will be missed by her family and friends.
Doris is survived by her 4 children, 4 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, her sister, Jean Hume.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on May, 7, 2015 at 10:00am at St. Andre Bessette Parish- Sacred Heart Church, 291 Union Avenue, Laconia. Burial will follow in New Riverside Cemetery, Alton, NH. Date and time to be announced.
