Dr. David Costa, Jr., 93, of New Bedford died Saturday January 31, 2015 peacefully at home. He was the husband of the late Loretta S. (Somerday) Costa.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late David and Julia (Roderick) Costa, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Dr. Costa was a dentist who operated his own dentistry practice in New Bedford for many years.
He was a graduate of Holy Family High School, Providence College, and Georgetown University School of Dentistry.
Dr. Costa served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps during World War II and the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the St. Vincent dePaul Society, the American Dental Association and the Massachusetts Dental Society.
He enjoyed spending his days with his granddog Chloe.
He is survived by his children, Barbara Costa-Coholan and her husband Thomas, Michael T. Costa and his wife Patricia, Anthony V. Costa and his wife Kim, and Anne Krawetz; his daughter-in-law, Marcia Costa; his son-in-law, Michael Krawetz; his siblings, Sr. Mary Kateri Costa, R.S.M., Albert Costa, Daniel Costa, Julia Pires, and Elizabeth Martins; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, David Costa III, and his siblings, Gilbert Costa, Joseph Costa, Elsie Winsper, Elaine Ferreira, and Agnes Guay.
His Funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11 AM. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-6 PM.
