Obituary


Father David J. Bartley, 72 of Salem, died on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 following a brief illness. Born and raised in Amesbury he was one seven children of the late Louis J. and Mary A. (Shaughnessy) Bartley.

A graduate of St. John Seminary, he was ordained May 23, 1970 and began his active ministry in June of ’70. Father Bartley served the Archdiocese of Boston in parishes in the following cities and towns: South Boston, Newton, Lynn, Swampscott, Salem, Peabody and Danvers as well as ten years of Hospital ministry. Following his retirement in 2004, he served in parishes in Ipswich, Topsfield, Lynnfield, Middleton, Beverly Farms, Medford and West Peabody.

He is survived by 3 brothers, Richard J. and wife Sally of Damariscotta, ME, Paul and wife Gayle of Dataw Island, SC, James and wife Elizabeth of Rye NH, 2 sisters, Mary Louise Bartley of Amesbury, Margaret and husband William Roche of Buxton, ME, sister-in-law, Teresa Bartley of Amesbury and his devoted friend Sean P. O’Neil, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Daniel L. Bartley.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. in St. Adelaide Church, 708 Lowell St. W. Peabody with an hour of visitation prior from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to EWTN, 5817 Old Leeds Rd., Irondale, AL 35210-2164 or the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, 15 Mount Carmel Rd., Danvers, 01923-3796.
