Obituary

Richard E. Martens, age 75, of West Bridgewater, formerly of Brockton, died January 27, 2015 at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center. He was the loving husband of Beverly F. (Wilkinson) Martens and the late Rosemary (Cotton) Martens. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Ernest and Anna (Frasca) Smith. He was raised and educated in Dorchester and proudly served with the US Marine Corps during Vietnam. For many years he had been employed as a mechanic for Plymouth Rock Transportation and various other transportation companies. He was a family man, animal lover and a handy man who loved to putter. Rich had a rough exterior, but with a heart of gold. He will be greatly missed.
He was the father of Richard, Jr. of Brockton, Patrick and his late wife Liza of Brockton, Kathleen Martens and her husband Patrick Cummings of Mansfield and Michael and his wife Lydia of Wareham; grandfather of nine; great grandfather of five; brother of Phyllis Dellaporta and Marie Lee both of Whitman, Eileen Solari of Maine, Joanne Smith of Plymouth and the late Charles Martens and Carol Zubris. He is also survived by Beverly’s children, Steve, Keri and Joseph, her six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton, Friday 4-8pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Saturday at 9:30 for a funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church, West Bridgewater at 10:30am. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland. Donations in Richard’s name may be made to the Animal Protection Center of SE Mass, 1300 West Elm Street Ext., Brockton, MA 02301.
