SPRINGFIELD – Antonio “Tony” Cabrera, 84, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, passed away peacefully at Chapin Center in Springfield on Friday, January 23, 2015 surrounded by the love of his family and the care and comfort of his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Naranjito, Puerto Rico on June 13, 1930, a beloved son of the late Rosendo Cabrera, Sr. and Maria (Ortiz) Cabrera. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal. He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. Following his military service, he moved to New York City in 1953, where he married his beloved wife, Silvia, on February 6, 1954 and together in 1956, they settled in Springfield. He was employed at the former Moore Drop Forge Company and was also the first Manager of the Casa Credit Union, both in Springfield. He was last employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare and retired in 1991. He was a communicant of the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield. During his leisure time, Tony was often seen working in his beautiful flower garden. Most of all, he was a devoted husband and father and was always ready to give sound advice and help his family and friends. He leaves his beloved wife of over 60 years, Silvia; his loving children, Milagros of Springfield and Gerard of Brooklyn, NY; his dear brother, Rosendo Cabrera, Jr. and his wife, Elena, of Naranjito, PR; his dear sisters, Petra Cruz of Hoboken, NJ, Georgina Rivera and her husband, Jose, of Springfield, Minnie Juan of Springfield, Nilda Bonet of Agawam and Miriam Rjonka of Springfield; his dear sister-in-law, Nilsa Cabrera of Cabo Rojo, PR; and his many dear nephews, nieces, friends and extended family. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brother, Cristobal Cabrera; and his dear sisters, Milagros Cabrera and Maria Colon. Due to inclement weather on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, his funeral will be held on Thursday morning, January 29, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel, 254 State Street, Springfield, MA 01103. His Entombment with US Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at Saint Michael the Archangel Mausoleum, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109.
