SPRINGFIELD – Vera A. (Farrell) Scammon, 84, a longtime resident of the East Springfield section of Springfield and currently a resident at the Falls View Apartments in Chicopee Falls, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. She passed into Eternal Life from her home surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born in Holyoke on September 10, 1930, a beloved daughter of the late Patrick F. and Catherine “Jessie” (Patnaude) Farrell. She lived in Springfield for many years before moving to Chicopee Falls in July of 2014. She was employed as a cook for many years at Kendall Commons and Chapin Center in Springfield and had last been employed at the Springfield Hobby Club. Vera enjoyed her many trips to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. She enjoyed playing bingo and was always ready to meet her many friends at any of the local bingo games. She was a member of the Moose Family Center where she made many new friends. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Edward C. Scammon who was Called Home on October 5, 1989. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her dear brother, Francis P. “Butch” Farrell; her dear sisters, Patricia A. Camry and Phyllis Sherman; and her dear companion, Richard Longley. She leaves her loving children, Donna M. Cerez of Chicopee, Kathy A. Smogowicz and her husband, Adam, of Preston, CT, John R. Scammon and his wife, Robin, Edward C. Scammon, Jr. and his wife, Lucy, Patricia L. Cormier and her husband, Michael, all of Springfield, and Pam R. Cofrancesco and her husband, Tony, of East Haven, CT; her twelve cherished grandchildren; her eight cherished great-grandchildren; her dear sister-in-law, Millie Farrell of Springfield; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Scammon and Farrell families. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, January 20, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129.
