Donald Eugene "Don" Bates, 86, of Anderson died January 8, 2015 at his residence after a brief illness.
He was born October 27, 1928 in Anderson, IN to Julian Simon and Bernice (Bridenthhal) Bates.
He served in the U.S. Army 5 years during the Korean War.
He was a policeman for 20 years for Anderson City Police Department before retiring in 1974; he was a custodian for Anderson Community Schools from 1974 to 1989 at 29th Street and Kilbuck Elementary Schools.
He was a member of Fifth Street United Methodist Church; Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #77; National Fed. Craft # 84; Life member of FOP # 48; very active with boy and girl scouts Troop 322 & 295; life member of Tecumseh Lodge; Indian Hobbyist Association; American Legion; Korean War Veterans Association. He enjoyed fishing, hiking and most boy scout activities. He also helped developed the River Walk Trails.
He is survived by his two daughters, Constance "Connie" Bates (Rob) Albright; Claudia Shaff; his son , Lyle (Angela) Bates; four siblings, Robert (Kathy) Bates; James Bates; Kenneth (Deanna) Collins; Susan Smits; seven grandchildren, Jonathon Shaff and Nicholas Shaff; Nathan (Suya) Chen-Bates, Megan Bates, Gretchen Bates; Angela (Brian) Sackett; and Carrie (David) Faulconer; eleven great-grandchildren; Brian Jr., Joshua, Anna, Ethan and Isaac Sackett; Parker, William and Samuel Faulconer; Blake Terry, Sophia Shaff and Juzhang Chen-Bates; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Charlotte (Barr) Bates on March 29, 2003; son, Adam Neal Bates; brothers, Mike Collins and Richard Bates; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clifford and Mary Barr.
Services will be at 6:00 pm. Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service. Masonic Rites will take place at 6:00 P.M. conducted by Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #77 followed by the funeral.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to Fifth Street United Methodist Church, Crossroads of America Boy Scout Council or Wapehani Girl Scout Council.
