Bras M. Brito, 85, of New Bedford died Thursday January 8, 2015 suddenly at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Julia (Almeida) Brito.
Born in Boa Vista, Cape Verde, the son of the late Miguel A. and Maria P. (Evora) Brito, he lived in New Bedford since 1959.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Brito was formerly employed as a merchant seaman on the Gulf Pride and also worked as a general foreman for New Bedford Stevedoring Company.
He was a member of the Merchant Mariners Club and the International Longshoremen's Association.
He is survived by three children, Mario Brito of Virginia Beach, VA, Kevin Brito and his wife Heather of New Bedford, and Adriann Brito of Randolph; his siblings, Joao Silva of Cape Verde and Julia Monteiro of New Bedford; four grandchildren, John Brito, Deontae Brito, Kevin Brito, Jr., and Daman Brito; and a great-grandson, Kyle J. Brito.
He was the father of the late John B. Brito, stepfather of the late Robert Almeida; and grandfather of the late Kyle J. Brito.
His Funeral will be held on Monday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
