John L. "Jack " Childes

John L. "Jack" Childes, 85, of Anderson, died January 2, 2015 at his home following an extended illness.
He was born on September 29, 1929 to John and Mary Emma (Knight) Childes on East Lynn Street in Anderson. The same street where his family owned and operated Childes Coal and Building Materials and Childes Petroleum Products for more than fifty years. The business was later sold to Sprague and then Ricker Oil. He retired from Madison County Co-op in 1992. He was also the grandson of one of the founding families of the Anderson Church of the Brethren. He served his church in many capacities. He was a graduate of Kentucky Military Institute and attended Fort Wayne School of Business. In December 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Airforce and served 18 months in Korea. When he returned in 1954 he joined his family business as a partner. In September 1957 he married Jeanette Johnson of Middletown. They became the parents of John, Jeff and Jane Childes and the grandparents of eleven. Jack was also an instructor in gun safety at the Anderson Rifle Club. He was an avid photographer and also enjoyed woodworking, making many gifts for his grandchildren.
Family surviving includes his wife, Jeanette; son, John and wife Patti Childes of Frankfort, and their children, Joe and Grace; son, Dr. Jeff and wife Laura Childes of Greenville, SC and their children, Kristen and Brad Hartman, Mariel and Trevor Harding, Benjamin and Kaitlynn Childes, Jonathon, Emily and Daniel Childes; daughter, Jane Ann and husband Ray Wright of Staunton, VA and their children, Greg, Brian, and Andrea Wright.
He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Tom and wife Sue Childes of Bloomington, and a sister, Nancy and husband Dr. Steven Pakes of Plano Texas, and brother-in-law, Glayne "Buster" and wife Rita Johnson of Daleville, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Emma Childes.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 2PM at the Anderson Church of the Brethren, officiated by Dr. Spencer Spaulding, Dr. John Bunch and Dr. Steven Pakes. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 11 AM until the time of the service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be given to Gentiva Hospice or Anderson Church of the Brethren.
