Obituary

Esther S. Meagher, a long-time Medford resident died at the Massachusetts General Hospital on Sunday. She was 99. Esther was raised in Weymouth, the daughter of the late John A. and Mary S. (Suominen) Hakala.

Esther worked as a young woman at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, where she met her future husband David. Once married and settled in Medford, Esther and David began their family. She later re-entered the work force and worked in the Engineering Department at Tufts University. She had the opportunity to be part of the research work of the National Council of Air and Stream Improvement which worked out of the university, conducting research on water, air and noise pollution. Her command of English grammar helped bring order and clarity to the results of the research and data compiled by the professors and students. She retired in 1981 at the age of 66.


The beloved wife of the late David R. Meagher who passed away in 2007, she was a devoted mother to Cynthia Kuhn and her late husband Henry, and the late Frederick Meagher. She was a dear sister of the late Vilma Welch, Oliver Hakala, Martha Ray, Frederick and Miriam Hakala. Esther also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Saturday, January 3rd from 10 AM to Noon with a funeral service in the funeral home at Noon. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
