Obituary

James Cummings, 82, of East Freetown died Friday December 26, 2014 at Brigham & Women's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Alicia (Mikus) Cummings; they had been married for 54 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Robert and Helen (McCarthy) Cummings, he lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth before moving to Freetown in 1987.

He was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church in Assonet.

Mr. Cummings was formerly employed as a senior quality control technician at Titleist.

He enjoyed making stained glass lamps and window hangings. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandson, and dogs.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Caryn Cummings of Bristol, RI, Cheryl Charbonneau and her husband John of Acushnet, and Scott Cummings and his wife Jennifer and Kathleen Oliveira and her husband Donald, all of New Bedford; a brother, Thomas Cummings of Acushnet; a sister, Ann Swistak of Fairhaven; his cousin, Donald Theodore of Hilton Head, SC; four grandchildren, Meagan Cabral, Jeffrey Charbonneau, Kristen Oliveira, and Julie Oliveira; a great-grandson, Colton James Gilson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Robert Cummings and Helen Thibeault.

His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday January 5, 2015 at 10 AM at St. Bernard's Church, Assonet. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum, Fall River. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241 or St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
