Gloria E. (Furr) Bowens, a resident of Salem, formerly of Medford, died at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers on Sunday, December 21, 2014. She was 89 years old.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, she was the beloved daughter of the late Leon L. and Iva (Talbot) Furr. Gloria was a Doctor of Education and was one of the first female Bio-Chemistry Majors at Tufts University in the 1940s. She had worked as a Science Teacher for the Boston Public Schools for more than 30 years and had also been Head of Hiring. She earned her Doctorate from Harvard.
She will be missed by her loving daughter, Stephanie T. Bowens, of Salem, and devoted siblings: Leon and his wife Perla Furr of Natick, Jean Swan of Medford, Esther Ellis of W. Peabody, Ronald Furr of Bridgewater, and Dawn Lewis of Medford. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Gloria was also the sister of the late Richard and James
Furr.
Her funeral service will be celebrated in the Grace Episcopal Church, 160 High Street, Medford on Monday, December 29, 2014, at Noon. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the church, prior to the service, from 10 to 12. Interment will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
