Mary McDuffie Melton, 79, of Fitzgerald, died Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at Pruitt Health in Fitzgerald.
Private services will be held at a later date.
Mrs. McDuffie was born December 6, 1935, in Pineview, Georgia to the late George & Bessie Smith McDuffie. She received her nurse’s training at the former Ben Hill County Hospital and worked as an LPN at Fitzgerald Nursing Home. She also cared for children and the sick in their homes. A former resident of Jacksonville, Florida, she lived in the community most of her life. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a son: William “Bill” Melton of Fitzgerald; grandsons: William M. Melton, Jr. and Jeffery Brian Melton; a great-grandson: John Tate Melton; two brothers: Franklin McDuffie of Fitzgerald and George “Buddy” McDuffie of Spartanburg, SC; three sisters: Margaret & Jimmy McCall, Annie Ruth Giddens, and Nellie Jones, all of Fitzgerald; a brother-in-law: Fred & Merlita Melton of Jacksonville, Florida as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Wilton Melton and three siblings: Mattie Faircloth, Donald McDuffie and Dellis McDuffie.
