Mary R. (Ashley) Startz, 91, of Groton died Saturday, December 6, 2014 at her daughter's home in North Stonington. She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Raymond Francis Startz Sr. He died in 1984.
She was born March 17, 1923 in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Frank Ashley and Charlotte (Harvey) Ashley Brown. She lived most of her life in the Mystic-Groton area. She worked for many years at the A&P Diner in Groton and also at Acme Wire and the Mystic Motor Lodge.
She is survived by her four children, Raymond (Lyn) Startz Jr. of Eunice FL, Douglas Startz of St. Petersburg FL, Sharon Burdick of Mystic and Linda (David) Jaques of North Stonington, as well as 10 loving grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Grace Brown of North Stonington and Lucy Fowler of Avon, IN.
In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her grandson John Startz and great grandson Kyle Startz.
Mary was a hard worker who enjoyed thrift store shopping, going to the casino, and to yard sales with her family. She will be remembered as an active, independent, productive woman. She was a strong-willed, loving mother. She had a witty sense of humor and you didn't know what she might say next.
Her family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, December 11, from 6 to 7, immediately followed by a Memorial Service at 7pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Graveside Service and burial will be conducted on Friday at 11:00am in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. All are welcome to attend.
