CHICOPEE – Walter E. Mathews, 72, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born at home on Thaddeus Street in Aldenville on June 29, 1942, a beloved son of the late Walter E. Mathews and Simone G. (Cloutier) Mathews St. James. He graduated from Chicopee High School and lived in Aldenville for many years. He later moved to Agawam, where he lived for several years before moving back to Aldenville around 1988. He served in the Air National Guard at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield and was employed for over 23 years at the former Sweet Life Foods in Enfield, CT before retiring around 2002. During his younger years, he played football in high school and recently enjoyed playing softball with the Old Timers Senior Softball League. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox. He leaves his two sons, Jason J. Mathews of Feeding Hills and Dean R. Mathews of Agawam; his four grandsons, Dylan Savageau, Jeremy Mathews, Samuel Mathews and Benjamin Mathews; his former wife, Joan M. (Martel) Mathews of West Springfield; his sister, Linda Dominic of Huntersville, NC; his two uncles, Raymond L. Cloutier of West Springfield and Roland H. Cloutier and his wife, Theresa, of Chicopee; his three aunts, Noella M. Gaydos, Jeanne C. Lafleur and Rita A. Kustra, all of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Mathews and Cloutier families. His funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, December 9, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, December 8, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
