Obituary

Michael Edward Magdon Jr., 85, of Peckville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 25, 2014, after a sudden illness. He was born in Scranton on April 19, 1929.

He was married to the late Elizabeth (Beneski) and together they celebrated 50 years of marriage before her passing in 2010. He is survived by four children, Sue Pagano and husband, Charlie of Dickson City; Michele Fyrster and husband, Jim of Mechanicsburg; Michael Magdon and wife, Natalie of Olyphant; and Paula Sweikert of Halifax. An infant daughter, Mary Lynn, preceded him in death along with two grandchildren, Sophia and Adolph Magdon lost in miscarriage. He was also very much loved by his grandsons, Maxwell and Jacob Fyrster, Matthew and Jacob Magdon and Nicholas and Daniel Sweikert.

He is survived by a sister, Wanda Szul, of Trenton, New Jersey, and was preceded in death by a brother, Hank Magdon; and a sister, Telly Magdon. He was also loved by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Michael was a Sergeant in the Army and served during the Korean War. He was a lifetime musician and recording artist, playing the bass in several bands, including the Continentals and the Pennsylvania Merry Makers. He was a lifelong member of the American Federation of Musicians, serving as a Board Member for many years.

He retired from the Scranton State School for the Deaf, where he also coached the boys and girls basketball teams. He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Peckville. In his retirement, Michael loved spending time with his family, helping out at Magdon Music, playing bingo and visiting the local casino.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday from the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home, 129 Grant Street, Olyphant, with Mass at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Peckville. Burial will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery in Blakely.

Visitation will be Friday, November 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Michael P. Glinsky Funeral Home in Olyphant, Pa.
