John “Jack” Costello, 89, of Mystic died Friday, November 7, 2014. Born in Hartford on May 31, 1925, Jack graduated after his Junior year to join the Navy, serving as an antiaircraft gunner onboard the USS Patterson (DD392), supporting the US Marines retaking the South Pacific Islands. Barely 18, he participated in the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot (where hundreds of enemy aircraft were shot down) and the rescue of the HMS Canabarra crew. The Patterson participated directly in the shelling of the New Georgia, Saipan, and Okinawa Islands.
After the war, Jack worked mainly as a Teamster for 40 years before retiring to Mystic in 1990. There he lived happily for 24 years, gardening and playing whiffle ball home run derby with his grandkids and their friends. He enjoyed his Mystic neighborhood, reveled in telling corny jokes, and loved his wife’s cooking. He was especially fond of Connecticut wrapped cigars and sub-premium beer.
He left his Mystic home reluctantly, one afternoon last week, and passed away peacefully at L&M Hospital, a few hours later, accompanied by family members. He leaves his wife of 65 years, Connie, his sister Mae, two daughters Gayle Thayer and Kate, a son, Jim, a daughter-in-law, Maggie; as well as four grandchildren: Micaela, Andrew, Ryland and Eamon.
Jack’s memorial services will be private. Family members wish to thank the Stonington First Responders and EMTs for their efficiency and their kindness, as well as the doctors and staff of L&M for their compassionate care. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Gemma Moran Food Bank in New London.
