João H. DeBarros, 84, of Dartmouth died Wednesday December 8, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Ilda O. (Oliveira) DeBarros.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, he was the son of the late Henrique and Martiniana (DaRosa) DeBarros. He came to the United States in 1938 and lived in Boston and New Bedford before moving to Dartmouth 30 years ago.
Mr. DeBarros was formerly employed by the Exxon Corporation as a Chief Steward for 30 years until his retirement.
He was a member of Exxon Annuitants Club. During World War II, he served in the United States Merchant Marine Service.
He enjoyed attending family functions.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John H. DeBarros of Dartmouth, and Steven DeBarros of Lakeville; a daughter, Elizabeth M. DeBarros of Milton; three brothers, Joseph H. Barros of New Bedford, Edward H. Barros of Dartmouth, and George H. DeBarros of Washington State; two sisters, Priscilla Crisostomo of Taunton, and Ana DeBarros of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Brandon DeBarros and Nicole Amaral DeBarros; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Victor DeBarros and Henry P. Barros.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Saturday December 11, 2004 at 7:45 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Friday December 10, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
