Spencer: Donald E. Steiger, 88, of Point Estallee Drive, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, Nov. 10 after a long battle with pneumonia in Quabog Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center, West Brookfield.
He leaves his son Donald O. “Donnie” Steiger of Spencer, a daughter Sue Steiger of North Brookfield, three step-children Jeannie Ethier of Crozet, Virginia, Suzie Ethier of Rutland and Bernard Ethier of Templeton, two sisters Connie Beckner & Catherine Hoye, a brother Charles Steiger, 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a son Edward F. Steiger, a sister Patricia Steiger-Dash and a brother John R. Steiger.
Mr. Steiger was born in Sequatchie, Tenn., son of John H. and Julia C. (Washer) Steiger. He was a journeyman for the carpenters Local Union 929 for many years before retiring. He was an Aviation Mechanic for the United States Navy during WW II. He was a magician who enjoyed entertaining both children and adults with old school magic. He was a professional gambler. He appeared in the movie Wild Harvest. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending time with his family at his lake home and watching Western movies.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Nov. 13 at Noon in J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later date. A calling period will precede the funeral on Thursday from 10:30-12p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
