DAVID BRUCE DUNLAP, 89, of Hingham, MA died on Sunday, Dec. 5th at the Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham after a short illness and just eight weeks after the death of his wife of sixty-two years, Marjorie (Chapman) Dunlap. Born August 28, 1915 in Syracuse, NY, Mr. Dunlap grew up in Michigan and was a proud alumnus of the University of Michigan. A passionate sailor, an avid fan of college football and a fine amateur Civil War historian, Mr. Dunlap had turned to genealogical studies in his later years, doing extensive research around the country.
A graduate in marine engineering and naval architecture, Mr. Dunlap came to Hingham in 1941 and worked at the Hingham Shipyard and the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, MA. He and his wife made their life in Hingham and though they spent the fifteen years before his 1982 retirement in Maine and Maryland, they came back to Hingham and lived out their years in the house they had bought in 1946. The were members of the Hingham Yacht Club and the Hingham Historical Society.
He is survived by two daughters, Mardi Birmingham of Hingham and Barbara "Kix" Brooks of Brentwood, TN; 6 grandchildren, Katherine Birmingham Wilmore of London, England, Margaret Birmingham of San Francisco, CA, Suzanna Birmingham of New York City, Michael Birmingham of Boston, MA and Molly and Eric Brooks of Brentwood, TN.
Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The many friends still residing in the area made Mr. and Mrs. Dunlap's last years memorable and the family is very grateful to the wonderful caregivers, Susan Oberg and Patricia Bailey especially, who made it possible for them to stay in their home until the end.
A joint memorial service will be held at a later date. Meanwhile, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in their memory to the Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt St., Hingham, MA 02043.
