Obituary

Robert E. “Bob” Carney, 86, of Whitman passed away peacefully at home on November 5 with his loving family by his side.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Dorothy (Barry) Carney, and six children, Maureen Buitenhuys and her husband Douglas of Kingston, Diane Jenkins and her husband Douglas of Marstons Mills, Patricia Chighisola and her late husband Louis of Plympton, Timothy of West Bridgewater, James and his friend Helene Hatch of Biloxi, MS, and Kathleen Carney-Mark and her husband Elliot Mark of Wellesley.

Bob was the son of the late Edward and Mary Carney. He was born in Maynard and raised in Whitman. Bob was a graduate of Whitman High School, Class of 1946 and served in the US Army during World War II.

He worked at Bostonian Shoe for over 30 years and then in the Whitman-Hanson school system as head custodian for 20 years.

Bob was an avid softball player who played into his 60's, and was a referee at many local high school basketball games. He loved traveling and spending time with family and friends, but was always happiest at home.

In addition to his wife and children, he leaves behind two sisters, Kathryn White and Maryann O'Connell, and two brothers, David and Phillip. He also leaves 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Tuesday, November 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Interment will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Monday, November 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Chapel
