Mary T. (Carney) Horrocks, 86, of Mattapoisett died Monday December 6, 2004 at Sippican Healthcare Center in Marion after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Honorable Ernest C. Horrocks, Jr.
Born in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of the late John and Mary Ellen (Goff) Carney, she spent her early years living in New Bedford and was a graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1936.
During her lifetime, Mrs. Horrocks enjoyed reading and writing and served as a teacher's aide with the New Bedford and Old Rochester Regional Public Schools. She also participated as a volunteer reader for the blind at the New Bedford Public Library.
Mrs. Horrocks spent many years as a member of the YMCA Water Aerobics Class, the New Bedford Women's Club and the Cardinal Newman Club at UMass-Dartmouth.
As a longtime resident of Mattapoisett, Mrs. Horrocks enjoyed her times with the Mattapoisett Women's Club, the Inter-Generational Choir at Mattapoisett Center School and attending concerts of the Tri-County Regional Symphonic Band and the Mattapoisett Town Band. She also spent many happy hours playing bridge with her friends.
Survivors include 5 daughters, Patricia Apperson and Ellen Horrocks, both of Mattapoisett,Rosemary Cookson of Pittsfield, Maribeth DiVeglia of Madbury, NH, and Nancy Chrzanowski of Austin, TX; 8 grandchildren, Michael and David Cookson, Mary Ellen and Peter Chrzanowski, Rory and Andrew Apperson, and Jon and Nick DiVeglia; and several loyal friends.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday December 9, 2004 at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven. Visiting hours will be on Thursday morning from 9-11 AM prior to the service.
