Kathleen M. (Kitty) Stevens, 84, of North Truro died Wednesday, October 22nd in her home. She was the beloved life partner of Alexandra MacDonald for over 40 years.
Kitty, the oldest of seven children loved her family. She was born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late William and Rita [Pinto] Stevens. She graduated from Bridgewater State College and earned her Master’s Degree from the Teachers College at Columbia University. She served as a guidance counselor in the Valley Stream South School System in New York until her retirement in 1987.
A resident of New York City, Kitty has summered in Truro since 1949. Moving here full-time in 2003, Kitty’s life was further enriched by her loving relationship with Alexandra, and their marriage in 2007. Her spirit was well-loved by a large group of friends from New York City, Truro Massachusetts to Del Ray Beach, Florida.
Active in civic life, she served as a board member of the Truro Council on Aging, a founding member of the Council of Elders in the Fordham Hill Apartments in New York City, a driver for Meals on Wheels and an active member of the Truro Historical Society. As a long standing resident of Truro, Kitty’s love of the ocean and watching birds clamoring for food filled her awareness of community initiatives. Most famous for her love of cooking, her adaptation of Chinese cuisines (having been a student of Chef Grace Chu), their annual Bocce Party on Labor Day, and numerous birthday celebrations, Kitty gave her compassion and love unconditionally. Her friends will always carry this ‘treasure’ in their hearts.
Kitty will be missed by her life partner, her sister, Barbara Stevens of Provincetown, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, as well as many friends. She was predeceased by brothers Richard, Bruce, Robert, William and Michael Stevens.
A celebration of Kitty’s life will be held in the spring of 2015.
