Mary E. Hayes
...formerly of Tewksbury; age 72
PELHAM, NH - Mary E. “Betty” (Erhardt) Hayes, age 72, a former resident of
Tewksbury, died Saturday night, Dec. 4, at her Pelham home, after a brief illness. She
was the wife of the late Donald R. Hayes, who died in 1974, and is survived by her partner for 27 years,
Ernest Raddatz of Pelham, NH.
She was born in Cambridge, Aug. 6, 1932, a daughter of the late Herman and Gertrude (Haley)
Erhardt. She was raised in Arlington, and graduated from Arlington High School. She lived in
Tewksbury from 1955 until 1998. For the last seven years, she had lived with her daughter’s
family in Pelham, NH. She summered at Arlington Pond in Salem,NH, and was a member of the
Arlington Park Improvement Association.
As a resident of Tewksbury, she was employed by the Tewksbury Police Department in the
capacity of Truant Officer, Constable, and Crossing Guard.
She attended St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Lowell.
She will be remembered as having devoted her life to her family.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Melanie J. and her husband Stephen Nawoichik
of Lexington, Carolyn and her husband Mark Carter of Pelham; two sons and a daughter-in-law,
Donald R. Hayes Jr. of Boston, and Richard T. Hayes and his wife Lisa Harrington-Hayes of
Salem, NH; seven grandchildren, Stephen and Sarah Nawoichik, Michael and Christopher Carter,
Jesse, Nicholas, and James Hayes; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice Ronchetti of Arlington,
Jean Pearson and her husband Ronald of Carlisle, and John DeMarco of Burlington.
She was also sister of the late Louise DeMarco.
Her Funeral Service was held Thursday Dec. 9, in St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Lowell. Interment followed in Tewksbury Cemetery.
