Jean Helen Rincicotti Shelburn, 86, of Stone Ridge Retirement Community and Venice, Florida died on October 14, 2014 after losing a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
She was born in New London on August 30,1928 to Albert H. Rincicotti and Jennie Belle (Daniels) Rincicotti, who predeceased her.
She leaves her husband of 64 years, John L. Shelburn, a daughter, Jeanne L. Shelburn and her husband Barry Pinkowitz; a son, Keith C. Shelburn, and his wife Joan Elizabeth(Foley) Shelburn; four grandchildren, Ainsley Pinkowitz, Benjamin Shelburn and his wife, Alexandra, Kathrine Shelburn and John C. Shelburn.
Jean graduated from the Williams School in 1946 and with the class of 1950 from Connecticut College, majoring in Mathematics. After her graduation she was employed by the Providence Mutual Insurance Company as Assistant to the Comptroller .She was later employed in the design department of the Electric Boat Company in Groton and was involved in the design and construction of the first nuclear submarine, Nautilus. She also served as bookkeeper for her father’s business, Union Sheet Metal Works of New London. Returning to work after starting her family, she was employed for many years as Acquisitions Librarian at Connecticut College.
Although a mathematics major, Jean enjoyed many artistic pursuits in her retirement years, notably quilting and porcelain painting. She also found travel throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean particularly enjoyable. Some of her most memorable trips were traveling with her husband on their yearly autumn journeys throughout New England.
A private memorial service for family members will be held at a later date.
