Richard W. Salvo, age 51 died suddenly Thursday evening Dec. 2, at the Cambridge City Hospital . Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Leocadia (Lencewicz) & Charles M. Salvo Sr.
An outstanding athlete in his youth, in 1963 Richie was the winning pitcher for the Somerville Little League All Stars, defeating the Melrose Nationals for the District Crown. This was Somerville's first title in 14 years of competetion. In 1965 Richie led Trum Field's track team to its ninth title in the annual Junior Olympics conducted by the Somerville Recreation Commission. In addition to setting a new class C running broad jump record with a leap of 15 feet 7 inches, Richie scored wins to the 60 yard dash, the 50 yard hurdles, and led off the winning 1/4 mile relay team. His record erased the 13 feet 10 inches mark set in 1942. In 1967, he continued his dominance in Class B track, setting another long jump record with a leap of 17 feet 11 inches, winning the 75 yard dash, and anchoring the winning 1/2 mile relay team. Both long jump records still stand today. Richard's professional athletic abilities were compromised due to ongoing health related issues.
Richard was a 1971 graduate of Somerville High School. He was a lifelong Somerville resident and a longtime member of the Dante Club.
Richard was the loving son of the late Leocadia (Lencewicz) & Charles M. Salvo Sr. Brother of Joseph Salvo and his wife Michelle, Charlene Buckley and her husband Thomas all of Tewksbury. Maria Francione of Chelmsford and the late Charles M. Salvo Jr. Loving uncle of Charles, Jodi, Eric and Christopher Salvo, Rosemarie and Michael Francione, Lauren and Kara Buckley. In addition to his many friends and relatives, Richard is also survived by his loving cousins, Sara (Giambrone) Di Censo, Linda (Salvo) Bettencourt, Stephen Salvo and his uncle Iggy Salvo, who was at his bedside daily during his hospital stay.
A funeral service will be held in the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Tuesday December 7 at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Monday 4 thru 7. Services will conclude with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
