Captain Daniel A. Stuart, U.S.N. Ret., 97, of Dartmouth died Tuesday November 30, 2004 peacefully at his home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Eileen (O'Donnell) Stuart.
Born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, the son of the late Daniel T. and Lena (Alfriend) Stuart, he resided in Barrington, Rhode Island for 25 years before moving to Dartmouth in 1987.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
Captain Stuart was a 1931 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. In June 1931, he was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy, beginning a long and distinguished career that spanned 30 years until his retirement in 1961. He was a veteran destroyer commander who saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during World War II. In addition to numerous commendations and decorations, he was awarded the Silver Star. His duty stations included the USS Omaha (CL4), the USS Mahan (DD364), the USS King (DD424), the USS Philadelphia (CL41), the USS Madison (DD425), the USS Portsmouth (CL102) and the USS Vulcan (AR5). Other stations where he served were the Naval Academy PG School; COMDESLANT; COMSOWESPAC; COMFIVE Norfolk, Virginia; the Bureau of Naval Personnel Washington, D.C.; NATO Defense College Paris, France; CINCLANTFLT; and COMMSTSATL.
He was an avid gardener and a loyal Boston Red Sox fan for many years.
Survivors include his brother, Robert T. Stuart of Portsmouth, Virginia; his sister-in-law, Teresa O. Buckley of Dartmouth; his brother-in-law, Dr. William F. O'Donnell, Jr. and his wife, Mary Ellen of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday December 4, 2004 at 11 AM in St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth. Burial with Full Military Honors from the U.S. Navy will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Visiting hours will be on Friday December 3, 2004 from 4-7 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
