Obituary

John B. Sebastian, Jr., 70, lost his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) at home on September 27th surrounded by family.
He is survived by his wife Shirley A. Sebastian; his three sons, Todd, Peter and Seth McDonnell; two daughters-in-law, Helen and Catherine, and five grandchildren.

Jack was born in Norwich, CT, to John Bernard Sebastian (Barney) and Ethelyn Judson Sebastian on September 29, 1943. He graduated from the Norwich Free Academy in 1961 and attended Tufts University where he was an active member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity – ATO where he was voted president his senior year. Jack obtained a degree in Civil Engineering in 1965.

Continuing his passion for life-long learning, Jack received a MS of Finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1992.
Upon graduation from Tufts, Jack joined Electric Boat (EB) in Groton in the nuclear projects division. Over the course of his long tenured career, he held many different positions at EB from design in the early years to General Superintendent of the steel trades to ultimately becoming Manager of the Virginia Class Submarine design / build team.

Although Jack was born in Norwich, he was also a lifelong resident of Groton Long Point. He spent much of his free time volunteering for the Point’s Association Board, the Conservation Committee, and overseeing Roads and Docks. He never hesitated to roll up his sleeves to help out. Over the years, Jack was also actively involved in the Noank Baptist Church, Group Homes, and the Groton Representative Town Meeting.

Jack’s passions were many and included: reading, carpentry, sailing, skiing, hiking, nature, Labrador Retrievers, and most importantly, learning and family.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday at 1pm at the Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights, Noank, CT 06340.
