Obituary

Joan V. (Fields) Cohen, at the age of 82, died peacefully at her home after a courageous and short battle with cancer, on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, in Kingston.

She was born on September 20, 1932, in Boston to Grace (Saunders) (Fields) O’Day and John Fields. She grew up in Braintree and Quincy. Joan graduated from Quincy North High School. She then worked at Raytheon.

Joan met and then married husband, Walter, on September 7, 1957 at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church of Hanover. Together they raised five children in the town of Pembroke.

Joan had a talent for and loved ceramics. She taught her children, friends and neighbors through the 70’s and 80’s. Joan volunteered her time and talents from 1980 to 1998 to the Salvation Army in Plymouth and the Salvation Army Hillcrest Camp in Sharon, as well as, her son Brian’s school, The Maquan School in Hanson during the 70’s teaching ceramics to physically and mentally disadvantaged children. In her later years, she continued her love of ceramics with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joan also gave her time as a Boy Scout Den Mother and Campfire leader.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cohen in 1994, her son, Kevin in 1999 and her son, Brian in 2002. Joan is survived by her children, Donna (Cohen) Barry and husband Michael of Dighton, Jimmy Cohen and wife Diane of Weymouth and Shawn Cohen and wife Lauren of Plymouth; her grandchildren, Matthew Cohen, Jessica Cohen, Jessica (Barry) Loud, Christopher Cohen, Michael Cohen, Mark Cohen, Allison McAuliffe, Brittany Emde and Courtney Emde; her great-grandchildren, Ava Loud, Joshua Cohen, Mackenzie Loud, Julia Cohen, and Khloe Loud.

Visiting hours will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 7 Mattakeesett Street, (Route 14), Pembroke, on Monday, September 29, 2014, from 4:00-8:00 PM.

Her funeral service will be held at the Shepherd Funeral Home, Pembroke, on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at 10:00 AM.

Interment will follow at the Center Cemetery, Oldham Street, Pembroke.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Circle, Suite 326, Plymouth, MA 02360 or to The Kingston Public Library, 6 Green Street, Kingston, MA 02364.
