Obituary

Mr. Richard Robert “Dick” Barrington, of Taunton, died unexpectedly Saturday, September 20 in Morton Hospital. He was born 65 years ago in Taunton, the son of the late Richard W. “Chief” and Leah D. (Carr) Barrington. He was educated in Taunton, having graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar School and the former Msgr. James Coyle High School. Following high school, Dick graduated from Florida State University. Prior to his retirement in the spring of 2014, he was employed by the City of Taunton School System for several years. He was previously employed by the Prudential Insurance Company, and also worked as a bartender. He was a member of the Taunton Lodge of Elks. An accomplished athlete, Dick enjoyed playing golf and pool, and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1967 as a catcher. He also enjoyed painting landscapes, traveling, watching all sports and WGBH television. He put many miles on the soles of his sneakers walking many of Taunton’s streets.
He leaves an aunt, Betty Barrington, and his cousins, Joanne McNamara and Joe Richie, Ted, Kathy and Jake McNamara, Mark, Christie and Bret McNamara, Nancy and Joan Nigro, and the Cornaglia family. Dick was predeceased by his aunts, Margaret, Joan and Mary.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, St. Mary's Square, Taunton, on Sunday, November 30 at 10:00 A.M. A Gathering will follow at Benjamin's Restaurant, 698 Bay Street, Taunton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Arrangements are under the direction of The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home of Taunton.
