Robert E. Stewart, 91, of High Street, Mystic passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.
Mr. Stewart was born in Lynn MA on July 7, 1923. He was married to Elsie (Anderson) Stewart for 62 years. She predeceased him in 2008. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. After graduating from the University of Minnesota as a mechanical engineer, he worked at General Dynamics where he was an engineer on the Nautilus. After leaving EB, he went to work at URI in new construction. He was a longtime resident of Mystic.
Mr. Stewart loved the outdoors, skiing, boating, swimming, skating, camping, and traveling. His passion was working with wood from carvings, ship models, marquetry to model airplanes. He built all of these with precision and artistry.
He is survived by his two children, Douglas and his wife Nancy Stewart of Groton and Kristine and her husband Yancey Horwath and grandson Colby Horwath of Ledyard, as well as his sister Thelma Francis of Chelmsford MA.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Thursday, September 25, at 10am at the Mystic Congregational Church, 43 East Main Street, Mystic. Interment with full military honors will immediately follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic. There are no visiting hours.
