TEWKSBURY - Mr. David T. Shepherd, age 82, a R.A.F. Veteran and retired machinist, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, September 20, at Lowell General Hospital’s, Saints Campus, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary B. (McEwen) Shepherd, with whom he had celebrated a 56th wedding anniversary this past November 16th.
Mr. Shepherd was born in Arbroath, Scotland, March 5, 1932, a son of the late George and Amy Shephard. He was raised in Arbroath, and enlisted into the Royal Air Force following WW2. He served in Germany during his tour of duty.
Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he began his career as a machinist in the construction and maintenance of paper mill machinery in Scotland, and was recruited by an American company, J.H. Horne of Lawrence to emigrate to the U.S.
In 1962, he and his new bride emigrated to Bradford, Massachusetts. They purchased a home in Andover in 1964, and relocated to Tewksbury in 1974, where they had remained.
David’s career as a machinist with J.H. Horne lasted 35 years. He retired at age 70 from the P.R.I. Company in Billerica, now Brooks Machine, after 5 years of service.
Mr. Shepherd was proud of his Scottish heritage, and was an active member of Andover’s Scottish Clan. He was a long time member of the A.F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge in Andover.
Besides his wife, he leaves two cousins, Robert W. Smith of Windham, NH, and Lynn Shaw and her husband Bill of Andover; a sister-in-law, Peggy Morrison, four nieces and two nephews all in Scotland.
His Funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the funeral home. Memorials to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 will be appreciated.
