
Horace M. “H. M.” McSwain, 94, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Big Creek Baptist Church in Irwinville, with the Rev. Wayne McCrimmon officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 248 Alapaha River Road, Chula, Georgia, after 12 noon on Friday and the body will lie in repose at the residence until the funeral hour.
Mr. McSwain was born June 2, 1920, in Irwinville, Georgia, to the late Abe and Mattie McSwain. He lived in the area all of his life and was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church in Irwinville. Mr. McSwain owned and operated McSwain Trading Post and Flower shop located at the 319/82 junctions in Tifton for over 30 years. He sold vegetables in Tifton while sitting close to the park and was famous for his tomatoes. Mr. McSwain loved his customers. The local television station filmed him for his produce; it was his passion to grow vegetables for his family, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by two daughters: Susan Hyde of Irwinville and Harriet & Everett Sheffield of Warner Robins; five grandchildren: Cindy & Steve LaHue of Tifton, Lamar Hyde of Irwinville, Dennis & Susan Mobley of Gold Hill, North Carolina, Michael & Monica Sheffield of Marietta and Jennifer & Gene Misiak of Warner Robins and seven great-grandchildren: Casey Hyde, Stephanie & Clint Fountain, Michael Fountain, Sydney Mobley, Brady Sheffield, Eliza Sheffield and Isabella Misiak. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years: Jennett Giddens McSwain; daughter: Martha Mobley and Little Ellen McSwain; a son-in-law: Roy Hyde; a grandson: David Mobley; brothers: Willie, Frank, Elmo, Jessie, Oscar and Clifton McSwain and two sisters: Lola Futch and Annie Dukes.
