CHICOPEE – Joseph John Brodeur, 86, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, September 4, 2014. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born at home on Call Street in the Willimansett section of Chicopee on October 11, 1927, a beloved son of the late Alfred Brodeur and Marie Albertine (Pelletier) Brodeur. He was raised in the Aldenville section of Chicopee, graduated from Saint Francis Academy in Biddeford, Maine and was a lifelong resident of Chicopee. He served his country during World War II in the United States Navy and attained the rank of Seaman Second Class. He served aboard the USS Soley and the USS Harland R. Dickson and received the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Chicopee and was employed for 37 years as a printer and shift supervisor at the former Champion Packages in Chicopee, which later became International Paper. During his leisure time, Joe and his wife, Doris, enjoyed RVing and were well-known at many of the local RV parks. He was a member of the Pioneer Valley Chapter 8 Camping Association, an original member of the Aldenville Junior Athletic Club in Chicopee (AJAC), and a passionate die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. Joe was a quiet man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Doris (Bernier) Brodeur. They were married on November 6, 1948 at Saint Theresa of Lisieux Church in South Hadley and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving children, David O. Brodeur and his wife, Lisa, of Chicopee, Tom Brodeur and his wife, Sharon, of Rockland, MA, and Anne Marie Whelihan and her husband, James, of Chicopee; his eight cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Reesha Brodeur and her partner, Lonnie Waldron, Sarah King and her husband, David, Brandon Hunter, Nicole Brodeur, Andrew Brodeur, Rachel Brodeur, Nathaniel Whelihan and Brittany Whelihan; his dear sisters-in-law, Marie Therese Brodeur and Peg Brodeur, both of Chicopee, and Peggy Brodeur of New Jersey; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Brodeur and Bernier families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brothers, Maurice Brodeur, Donald Brodeur and his wife, Theresa, Edward Brodeur, and Richard Brodeur; and his dear sister, Vivian Solo. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, September 8, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with US Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
