Jackie, her siblings and parents were a resident of 4424 Louisville Avenue near the railroad tracks in the old Highland Park area. Jackie attended Southern Junior High School. As children, and teenagers Jackie enjoyed spending time with her siblings and friends where she attended many concerts such as: Santana, ZZ Top, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple and Electric Light Orchestra. Her oldest sister recently shared a fond memory of Jackie while attending the ZZ Top concert where she remembered Jackie fainting at the concert before they made it to their assigned seats. And fortunately there were football players there who carried Jackie to her seat. It’s believed Jackie passed out because of the heat, cigarette smoke and the overcrowding. She remembers Jackie “going down like a log”. But after she was carried to her seat she came to and they enjoyed the concert.
Jackie also enjoyed the Fair. And Jackie’s friends and siblings would spend time at the Old Coney Island, Indianapolis Speedway, Iroquois Park and they would hang out at the Fish Bowl downtown. Jackie’s oldest sibling remembers spending time with Jackie downtown near the waterfront where they would “cruise” on the weekends.

Jackie’s favorite color was pink, and her favorite band/singers were Aerosmith and Johnny Cash. Her favorite actor was Robert De Niro and John Wayne. She enjoyed watching the local news in the morning to start off her day along with drinking a cup of coffee. Jackie liked to sew and knit. She had old records and an old record player and was very proud of her collection. She also liked to croche and wanted to be just as good as her youngest sister. Her children, when younger, received a scarf each that she knitted to keep them warm during the winter.

In May of 1975 Jackie was employed at Stouffers Hotel in downtown Louisville, where she gained employment with the help of her oldest sister. She worked in the Environmental Services Department. And it was at Stouffers where she met her husband, Rey.
The story goes like this: Rey and Jackie were in an elevator together and the elevator got stuck. Rey reached over to gently touch Jackie and told her that he would protect her and to assure her that everything would be okay. Jackie then told Rey not to touch her. And from that moment, Rey harassed Jackie to go out on a date with him and Jackie repeatedly told him no. But before he asked Jackie to go out on a date, he did ask permission of that of her oldest sister. Jackie told stories to her children where her father waited for Rey with a shot gun in hand while sitting on the front porch when Rey came to pick her up that night for their date. In January of 1976 Jackie and Rey were married.
Since Reys death, Jackie has told her family on numerous occasions: “if it was not for the dogs, I do not know what I would do”. “They are keeping me afloat”. For over 15,000 years dogs have worked to earn the distinction of being "man's best friend." Dogs have not only offered love and affection, but worked side-by-side with their human counterpart for centuries. The physical benefits of dog companionship, to name one are predicting seizures. Everyone knows that Jackie had seizures and Jackie had reported that Molly could sense the onset of her seizures. Everyone needs to feel needed and have something to care for. Pets provide some consistency to our lives. Caring for a pet can significantly affect our routine and gives us something to do and look forward to each day. And Molly & Sadie gave that to Jackie and they gave that back to her. Both dogs were equally loved by Jackie and they knew that. The family would get so mad at Jackie because she would just carry Sadie around like a baby in her arms. Sadie was just a spoiled rotten mess. Sadie had a V.I.P invitation (that never expired) for one. Sadie’s table “seat” for all her meals was on TOP of Jackie’s coffee table! Molly was the best dog of the two. She loved Jackie more than anything in this world and always had Jackie’s back. Jackie enjoyed giving Molly a bath. Jackie was grieving and struggled with other things, and grieving adults turn to their dogs for comfort. And she did just that. What amazing dogs Jackie had. Jackie would always tell her daughters how the dogs loved to sun bath in the sunroom. Just to know the closeness, companionship and friendship she had with them. I do not think any of us could say that about a close human friend.

Jackie was the owner/manager of El Rey Mexican Restaurant alongside her husband Rey. Jackie worked at El Rey Mexican restaurant from Jan 2001-October 2011. Prior to El Rey, Jackie was employed by Georgetown Manor Nursing home. Jackie was also a supervisor at Georgetown Manor in the Environmental Services Department. Before Georgetown Manor Jackie was also employed by Pine Tree Nursing Home and Meadows East Nursing home in the Environmental Services department.
Jackie was fearless, strong, generous, kind-hearted, likeable, nice and thick-skinned. She enjoyed having fun with her customers at El Rey Mexican and her friends at the Golden Nugget, The Tobacco Store, Meijer’s gas station and CVS in Fern Creek. Jackie was loved by her customers and friends. Claude shared a story recently about “how cool was it to be at an REO Speedwagon concert with my boss”. Memories such as this one, we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

O - For she is growing OLD,
T - For the TEARS she shed to save me,
H - For her HEART of purest gold,
E - For her EYES, with love-light shining,
R - For she is always RIGHT and always be.

Without You
Mom, without you, there would be no me.
Your love, your attention, your guidance,
have made me who I am.
Without you, I would be lost,
wandering aimlessly,
without direction or purpose.
You showed me the way
to serve, to accomplish, to persevere.
Without you, there would be an empty space
I could never fill, no matter how I tried.
Instead, because of you,
I have joy, contentment, satisfaction and peace.
Thank you, mom.
I have always loved you
and I always will.

Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is
a mystery and today is a gift,
which is why it is called the present.
What the caterpillar perceives is the end;
to the butterfly is just the beginning.
Everything that has a beginning has an ending.
Make your peace with that and all will be well
(Buddhist Saying)

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of Your Peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow Love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled,
as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
