Mary E. Merritt, 93, of Groton passed away Monday, August 25, 2014 after a brief illness. She was born January 14, 1921 in Stonington, the daughter of Roger and Grace Swallow.
Mary was married to Roscoe F. Merritt who predeceased her in 1993. Together they owned and operated a dairy farm and roadside stand, Merritt's Fort Hill Farm, in Groton for almost 50 years. Flowers were just one of the many crops they grew on their farm. She especially enjoyed creating beautiful bouquets for a host of regular customers at their roadside stand.
She is survived by her daughters, Frances and Mary and sons Roscoe, Peter and Allen. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Nelson and his staff at L & M Hospital for their care and compassion, Pastor Kenneth Hoyt of VITAS Hospice Care, and a special thanks to Shirley, Bess and Grace, three wonderful women who were a part of her team of caretakers in the last few years.
Mary's family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, September 4, from 5 to 7pm, at the Dinoto Funeral Home,17 Pearl Street, Mystic. Burial will be private for the family in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
