Obituary

Elizabeth Lillian Underwood Becker, 76, of Groton died Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Pendleton Healthcare in Mystic. She was born on August 19, 1938 in New London the daughter of the late Albert L. and Lula Mae (Allyn) Burrows. She was a 1956 graduate of Fitch High School. Elizabeth married Charles P. Underwood, who predeceased her, on Oct. 23, 1956, in Poquonnock Bridge.

She was a legal secretary for over 25 years beginning at Suisman Shapiro in New London; at Brown Jacobson in its Groton office; and finishing her career in 2004 at Kepple, Morgan & Avena in Pawcatuck.

Elizabeth enjoyed square dancing and was well-known for over 30 years as a round dance instructor for Liz’s Seashells of Guilford and other local square dance clubs. She was a member of the Connecticut Association of Round Dance Teachers and the New England Council of Round Dance Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Groton Senior Citizens Club, an avid bowler, and a fan of UConn women’s basketball and the Connecticut Sun. She was also proud to be a descendant of Captain Hubbard Burrows of Old Mystic who was killed in the battle of Fort Griswold in 1781.

Elizabeth is survived by her son Charles P. Underwood Jr. and his wife Michele of East Haven, her daughter LuElen F. Socha and her husband William of Noank, and three grandchildren, Katherine Socha, Allison Socha, and Charles P. Underwood III.

Her family would like to thank Drs. Haldas, Hellman, and Newton; her favorite nurse, Margaret; and the staff of Pendleton for her care.

Her family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, August 25, from 6 to 8pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Tuesday at the funeral home at 1:00pm. Burial will be private for the family.
