Slipped peacefully into heaven on August 16, 2014, welcomed by his wife of 62 years, Jeanne, and father and mother, George Sr. and Mary Smith of Chicago, Il. He will be deeply missed by his 5 children: Mark, Barbara (Jack) Reis, Dan, Tom, and Phil; 2 grandsons: Connor and Cole; and 10 nieces and nephews. He raised his family in Maplewood and was a research chemist at 3M Company, where he earned the rank of Corporate Scientist and was a member of the Carlton Society. His passions in life included fishing, bird hunting, MN Twins, and Fantasy Football, and he was guided by his deep and abiding faith and generous philanthropy, which included many volunteer hours at the Dorothy Day Center.Memorial Mass Thursday, August 21 at 10 AM, Cerenity Marian Care Center Chapel, 200 Earl St., St. Paul, with gathering beginning at 9 AM. Light lunch followed by interment at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to Health East Hospice, with a shout out to Nancy and Kara for their devoted support, and Marian Care Center, in appreciation for the TLC provided by his caregivers in his final months.
