WORCESTER___Robert J. Batterson, Sr., 84, of Holy Trinity Nursing Home, 300 Barber Ave., formerly of 101 Chadwick St., died Thursday Nov. 18 in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, 119 Belmont St. His wife of 55 years, Violet M. (Steen) Batterson died Dec. 27, 1999.
He leaves two sons, Robert J. Batterson, Jr., of Webster; Wayne M. Batterson, Command Sgt. Major, U.S. Army Retired of Silver Lakes, Ca., two daughters, Carol A. Carlo of Worcester and Linda J. Rizzuto of West Boylston; a brother, James Batterson of Amenia, NY., 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two sons, James Batterson of Rahway, NJ; and Richard Batterson of Worcester; and a sister, Helen Elio of Valley Stream, NY. He was born in Manhattan, New York son of James and Margaret (Dwyer) Batterson and lived in Worcester most of his life.
Mr. Batterson was an oil burner service technician many years for area companies and retired in 1984 from Bancroft Oil Co. He was at one time a self employed oil burner service technician and began his career working on a coal truck.
He was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran of World War II and served on the famous Murmansk ship convoys to Russia and was torpedoed on two different runs. He was a member of the Northampton Beagle Club and raised hunting dogs.
The funeral will be held on Saturday Nov. 20 from DIRSA-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 298 Grafton St., with a Mass at 1:00 p.m. in St. Christopher’s Church, 950 West Boylston St. Burial will be private in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Saturday Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, 01701.
