Obituary

SALEM- Alice M. Horne, 84, of Salem, died Sunday morning, May 20, 2001, in a local nursing home following a long illness.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Bertha I. (Jones) Horne and was a lifelong resident of the city.

Educated in Salem schools, she graduated from Salem High School in 1934, then from the Hawthorne Institute, and attended Boston University.

Prior to her retirement, she owned and operated Horne Business Service for 25 years, in addition to holding office positions locally.

Miss Horne was twice elected President of the Women’s Republican Club of Salem, was a city
Chairperson of the Salem Republican City Committee, director and first Vice-President of the Salem Chapter, AARP, and a longtime member and former President of the Salem Business and Professional Women’s Club. In 1989 Miss Horne was awarded the National Volunteer of the Year award from the AARP in Washington. She was a volunteer at Salem Hospital as Ombudsman and at the ICU information center and was a member of the Salem Heritage Days Committee.

Appointed by Mayor Jean Levesque, she served on the Heritage Plaza West Commission, the Bicentennial Commission and was the chairperson of a committee to study Salem school buildings.

Mayor Anthony Salvo appointed her to the board of directors of the Salem Council on Aging.

Since 1986, through North Shore Elder Services, Miss Horne has worked for the elderly, serving as a companion and then as a senior aide in outreach work. She was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church of Salem and will be remembered in Ward 2, where she lived most of her life and served as Warden during elections at the Carlton School voting precinct.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews and was the sister of the late Cora Cann, Ruth Chase, William Horne and Raymond Horne.

Her funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at 2 pm in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Visitation was Tuesday from 1 to 2 pm, prior to the service. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
