Eugenia (Monteiro) Sylvia, 92, of New Bedford died Thursday July 10, 2014 at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Manuel Sylvia.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Evelyn (Raymond) and Aurelio Monteiro Chor, she was raised in Cape Verde and returned to New Bedford in 1950.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mrs. Sylvia was formerly employed as an assembler for Cornell-Dubilier Electronics Corporation.
Mrs. Sylvia was a member of the St. Martin dePorres Guild, the Our Lady of the Assumption Club, the Cape Verdean Women's Club, and the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by four children, John Dantas and his wife Jovita of Westport, Mary Pacheco and her husband Robert of Swansea, Deolinda "DuDu" Morris of Norfolk, VA, and Antonio "Tony" Costa and his wife Susan of Dartmouth; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was the grandmother of the late Corey Costa and sister of the late Warren Parker.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9 AM at St. Mary's Church, Fairhaven (due to renovations at Our Lady of the Assumption Church). Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
