SALEM- Margaret A. “Peggy” Szpak, 71, wife of Matislaw “Matty” Szpak, of Salem, formerly of Hingham, died Sunday afternoon, June 3, 2001, at her home following a long illness.
Born in Weymouth, she was the daughter of the late William R. and Joanna L. (Moore) Hatch. Raised in Hingham, she was a graduate of Hingham High School in 1947 and was a resident of Salem since 1948.
Mrs. Szpak was employed by GTE Sylvania at the Boston Street, Salem plant for over 25 years and was a member of the Sylvania Quarter Century Club. She later worked for Almy’s Department Store in the cosmetics department. She then worked at the CVS store on Highland Avenue until her retirement in the early 1990's.
She was an avid gardener and animal lover.
Besides her husband, with whom she shared almost 53 years of marriage, she is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Susan Szpak of Salem, two daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Richard Gagne, Linda and Paul Morin, all of Beverly, two grandchildren, Keith Gagne of Beverly, Stephen Szpak Jr. of Salem, three sisters, Sister Caroline Hatch, Sisters of Providence, of Chelsea, Catherine Amoroso of Billerica, Mary Foster of Falls City, Nebraska, her beloved feline companion, Josephine, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late William Hatch and Helen E. Spak.
Her funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at 9:30 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, Salem. Visiting hours were Tuesday, 4 to 8 pm. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
