Mavis Downing Mobley, 90, of Fitzgerald, went home to be with the Lord July 5, 2014 at her residence.
Her homegoing celebration will be held on Tuesday, July 8th at 11:00 A.M. at the Fitzgerald Church of the Nazarene with Reverend David Ash officiating. Eugene Mobley will deliver a eulogy. The family will have a one hour visitation following the service.
Mrs. Mobley was born August 29, 1923, in River Junction, Florida, to the late Elmo Quinton and Florence Swords Downing.
After graduation from Fitzgerald High School, she was employed as bookkeeper for Lowell Packing Company and later served in that same capacity and as office manager/receptionist for several physicians in the local area and Meridian, Mississippi. At one time she served in several roles at Radio Station WBHB. As a gifted vocalist, songwriter, and accomplished pianist, she shared her lifelong passion for gospel music with family and friends and in concerts with various groups. She was the last surviving member of the Sunshine Trio composed of herself, Myrtle Royal, and Elnora Christian. Her insatiable love of reading included numerous advanced textbooks in many different fields. Hobbies included crocheting, working crossword puzzles, and computer games.
She is survived by children Byron (Barbara) Mobley of Fitzgerald, Lane Mobley of Decatur, Georgia, Ennis (Jean) Mobley of Powder Springs, Georgia, Eugene (Christine) Mobley of Bogart, Georgia; and one sister, Dorothy Jean (Kyle) Fuller of Fitzgerald. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Dale and Duane Mobley, Melissa Mobley Black, Kathryn Mobley-Goolsby, Jennifer Mobley Allgood, and Jessica Mobley; ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Elmo Mobley; two brothers, Lowell M. Downing and E. Q. Downing, Jr., of Fitzgerald; and one sister, Evelyn Troup of Jacksonville, Florida.
