Obituary

LEICESTER; Lawrence E. St. Denis, died Wednesday, June 11 at home with his loving family by his side. Larry was born in Worcester, MA on August 10, 1922 to Lorenzo Maximilian St. Denis and Corrine (Gagnon) St. Denis and lived in Leicester most of his life. Larry leaves behind a large extended family, including; 2 daughters, Cynthia Gelatt and her husband Eric of Orleans and Elizabeth Rollins and her husband Joseph of Leicester; 4 grandsons, his caregiver Jake Knox of Leicester with whom he lived, James Knox and his wife Danielle of Charlton, Curtis Gelatt and his wife Jessica of Brewster and Joseph Rollins of Leicester; 3 granddaughters, Caitlin Gelatt of Brewster, Jenna Rollins of Webster and Jillian Rollins of Leicester; 4 great-grandchildren, Abigaele Mann, Arianna Knox, Colton Knox and Weston Knox; 2 brothers, Leo St. Denis and his wife Janice and Arthur St. Denis and his wife, Jean; and 2 sisters, Lucille Sandborn and Rita Coonan. He also leaves numerous in laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Dolores, his brother, Ernest and his good friend and companion, Helen Hadley. Larry worked for many years and in many capacities for or through the Town of Leicester. He was a police officer for over 40 years, a school bus driver for over 50 years and he also worked for a long time in maintenance for the school department. In earlier years, Larry owned his own business and delivered mail between post offices throughout the region. Larry was also a very talented auto mechanic and a man who could fix anything. It was impossible to go anywhere without running into people who knew him and loved him. Larry was an aerial engineer in the Army Air corp during World War II and he earned numerous medals and citations for his service. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the 40/8 He was a member of the VFW, Leicester K of C. and St. Aloysius/St. Jude Catholic Church in Leicester. Larry had a good life with many blessings, but his family was always his greatest joy. He remained active up until the last few years of his life when he began his courageous battle with Alzheimers. We will always remember him as loving, supportive and selfless. The family would like to thank his team at Summit Elder Care in Charlton, the staff who assisted him in his home and all the others involved in his care. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Aloysius/St. Jude Chapel, 489 Pleasant St., Leicester at 11:00am on June 28, 2014, followed by a Celebration of Life at the K of C Hall on Manville St in Leicester. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Research or a charity of your choice. MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main St., Leicester are assisting the family with arrangements.
