Obituary

CHICOPEE – Jeannette H. (Plouffe) Matikowski Szatkowski, 90, a longtime resident of Shepherd Street in the Willimansett section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, June 12, 2014. She passed into Eternal Life at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Dona and Michael Major in Ludlow and her family surrounded by their loving care and comfort. She was born at home in South Hadley Falls on September 1, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late Rene and Exilda (Bluteau) Plouffe. She was raised in Chicopee, graduated in 1942 from Chicopee High School and lived in Chicopee for most of her life before moving to Ludlow with her family in 2006. She enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Seaman First Class. She was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, DC and received the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Following her military service, she returned to Chicopee and was last employed for 18 years for the Chicopee School Department. Most of all, she was a loving wife and mother who was devoted to her cherished family and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved a spirited game of cards, candlepin bowling, knitting, reading, and watching her beloved Red Sox. While living in the Fairview section of Chicopee, she enjoyed socializing with her many friends at the Fairhaven Apartments on Britton Street and upon moving to Ludlow, she made many new friends at the Ludlow Senior Center. She was predeceased by her beloved husbands, Joseph Matikowski who was Called Home on May 19, 1975; and Stanley Szatkowski who was Called Home on March 6, 1995. She leaves her loving children, David Matikowski and his wife, Diane, of Wallingford, CT, and Dona A. Major and her husband, Michael, of Ludlow with whom she lived; her cherished grandchildren, Samara Viauso and her husband, Joe, of Hamden, CT, Joseph Matikowski and his wife, Cory, of Cheshire, CT; Stephen Major of South Kingston, RI, and Christine Major of Portland, OR; her cherished great-grandchildren, Juliana and Rocco Viauso of Hamden, CT, and Ava and Stella Jane Matikowski of Cheshire, CT; her loving step-sons, Thomas Szatkowski and his wife, Maryann, of Charleston, MA, and Richard Szatkowski of Harwinton, CT; her cherished step-grandchildren, Thomas Szatkowski of Baltimore, MD and Anna Szatkowski of Charleston, MA; her loving and devoted sister, Vivian Herdendorf of Cocoa Beach, FL; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Szatkowski, Matikowski and Plouffe families. Her friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, June 16, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial with US Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Saint Stanislaus Cemetery, 800 Montgomery Street, Chicopee, MA 01013.
