New Bedford – Arlene M. Souza, age 76 of New Bedford, passed away, unexpectedly, on Friday, June 6 2014 At St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the loving wife of 49 years to Donald N. Souza and the daughter of Mary (Simmons) and John J. Nunes. Mrs. Souza was a lifelong resident of New Bedford where she worked in the Textile industry and, leading up to her retirement, worked for the Dartmouth School Department in the cafeteria.
Arlene was a member of the Mount Carmel Seniors and Mount Carmel Women’s Club. She enjoyed the Portuguese festivals in the city.
She leaves behind her husband, Donald, of Dartmouth; a son, Timothy Souza, of Dartmouth; a cousin, Mark Simmons and his family; 3 brother in-laws: George Souza and his wife, Laura, of Acushnet, Leonard Souza and his wife, Beverly, of New Bedford, and Paul Souza and his wife, Ruthie, of North Carolina; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral will be Wednesday, June 11 beginning in the funeral home at 9:30 A.M. and continuing with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 A.M. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 – 7 P.M. Relatives and friends are welcomed to attend.
