BELMONT- Gertrude C. Smith, 91, of Belmont died at the de Rham Hospice House, Cambridge MA on May 29, 2014.
Gertrude was born Aug 17, 1922 in Brooklyn NY, the daughter of Elvera (Linares) and George A. Young.
Gertrude attended Girl’s Commercial High School in Brooklyn. Gertrude worked at Sperry Gyroscope Corp, a defense contractor, during WWII where she used a drill press and performed precision solder work to assemble bomb siting devices.
Gertrude married John J. Smith of the Bronx, NY on July 5, 1947. They moved to Bethpage on Long Island in NY and raised 3 children before retiring to Ashland NH in 1984.
Gertrude was the beloved wife of the late John J. Smith. She is survived by her brother George J.Young of Massapequa NY, her daughter, Patricia Smith Burkhart of Arlington, MA, and two sons, William J. Smith of Mattituck, NY, and James J. Smith of Chandler, AZ. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Gertrude was a devoted wife, mother and caregiver to her many friends and neighbors. She had a “green thumb” and loved to design, plant and tend gardens wherever she lived.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen.
